This isn’t the most politically correct blog. And while part of me feels bad and really insensitive about posting this, most of me is fairly certain that most of you will appreciate it.
I was teaching the other day (as I am wont to do) and one of the vocab words was “special.” After reviewing the book definition and asking several kids to use it in a sentence, we moved on. But one student (John) kept yelling out, “TEACHER! I’M SPECIAL!!!!” He wouldn’t knock it off. Now while I loath to give any student detention, that does not mean that I don’t control my classroom (most of the time).
So in the spirit of education for the real world (because most of these kids will end up in a University in the States at some point) and classroom management, I taught them what special was slang for.
Matt (John’s friend) was drinking water. Water came out his nose. The poor kid had to leave the room to wash his hands.
But order was restored, John quieted down, and the lesson continued.

When I was
A boy of ten
I had a very best friend
Ed was kind
WIth good intent
but just a little different
O, special ed
Momma dropped him on his head
Now he’s not so bright, instead
he’s a little bit special
just a little bit special
we played tag
he’d get hurt
i played ’soldier’
he’d eat dirt
i like math
and spelling bee
ed liked to a tree
O, special ed
momma dropped him on his head
now she keeps in the shed
coz he’s a little bit special
just a little bit special
i ran track
hang out in malls
ed ran head first into walls
i had girls
lots of clothes
ed had names for all his toes
O, special ed
momma dropped him on his head
Now he thinks a peice of bread
coz he’s a little bit special
just a little bit special
One day talking to special ed
he grabbed a brick
and he swung at my head
and as he laughed at me thats when i knew
that special ed just made me special too
now i laugh as i count bugs
i give strangers great big hugs
next to me ed is fine
yeah, he’s a f***in einstein
O, special ed and me

wow, you are the mean teacher, shaming the kids in front of the peers—they don’t have to be worried about bullies when the teacher can do it for them! much love
Comment by krissy 07/12/2006 @ 22:52That’s the weird thing about Korea. The classroom dynamic is really different from a U.S. classroom. Some things are rather obvious. Telling someone that they’re fat is more like an observation rather than an insult. The sensitivity level is just different. That, and if it comes down to being given detention or being made fun of, every student will choose being teased by the teacher. Nothing is ever mean-spirited. The only repercussion is when the students try and make fun of me. (Which doesn’t work so well. Most of the time they try and tell me I’m crazy. I just say that I know that and go on with the lesson.)
